Tapo Integration please!

Please add Tapo support!!! So you can control your smart plugs and veiw ther voltage and turn them on and off, and with the ledstrips create effects and control each Led, Control lights bulbs, see sensors like door. windows and motion sensors and water drip ones and with all tapo devices control them and make automation. SO can Home assistant please make a offical one the dose not lag or have slow connections to control them. and not have all theys funny keys or have to enter ip of the device. Thanks

A custom integration exists for this today.

Yeah I know but dont you need the ip of the device?

Probably and there is no way to avoid that if the device does not make itself visible on the network somehow.
TP-Link had a huge fallout with the home automations communities a few years back with their Kasa plugs, so there is a history of being closed to third parties.

Yes, but that’s not so hard and you only have to do it once.

How do you expect a device to communicate over a network without telling it the IP address you want it to connect to? Bonkers.

In the Tapo custom integration there is an option to track Tapo devices by MAC, although it is shown as being in Beta. You could give that a try. If it works then it should avoid having to specify the device IP. You can find the MAC of the device in the Tapo app.

I haven’t tried this option because I’m happy using IPs, but it would be interesting to hear how you get on.

Yeah actually I installed the custom integration and it not so bad the ips are pretty eazy to get. The down side is its not automatic like some other devices the work with home assistant. thanks though

I know its just, some devices get picked up automatic by home assistant without have to enter ips manually.

Well let’s try to fix that then. What do network scanners say the devices are advertising?

You also will no doubt have read this

Additional features

  • tracking of ip address. Cause Tapo local discovery isn’t working for a lot of Tapo devices, this integration can try to track ip address changes by reling on MAC address. This requires Home Assistant to runs on the same devices network and the capability to send ARP and broadcast packets.

Two things I take from that - discovery isn’t easy with these devices, so it may never get better. And a corollary is that an official integration may not bring discovery.

Second, once you have entered the IP address, this integration seems to try to keep track off IP changes, so don’t worry too much.

Auto discovery exists in many HA Integrations and in the Tapo app itself too.

So then someone will correct what the author of the integration says and will add it. Won’t be me, I don’t have one.

I have already asked what is being broadcast by these devices, but no reply so far.
