Tapo P110M Energy Monitoring

Yep, that’s correct, @trimethia; I would get them when they go on sale via amazon (I got mine for about $20 each). I am fairly sure the firmware upgrade will come. Though I know the rule of not buying something awaiting a feature to come IN THE FUTURE!!!

Also as per this post above from @TexTown , the best place to know when this is released is to follow their firmware updates page.

mgguinne perfectly answered your question

For all those commenting about asking for matter energy monitoring support, note that it’s not actually home assistant blocking this but tp-link, they need to update the firmware.

I would suggest chiming in on this forum post here: Tapo P110M update for Matter 1.3 - TP-Link Community

Tp-link have responded but haven’t been very committal. I’d suggest bumping the forum post!

I voted for the feature, I think as many people as possible should vote this feature up too!

@mgguinne You don’t need the TP-link cloud to get the energy consumption.
You can get all sensors and controls locally over HTTP.

Seems like the credentials get set on the device, the first time you added it to the TP-Link cloud. I provisioned the Wi-Fi credentials via the Matter setup, never even installed the TP-Link app or created an account.

I’m using a P110M locally via Matter and the TP-Link integration. The device is blocked by firewall from the internet. I did unblock it once, did an update (to v1.2.3) and enabled the block again, without issue.

A (possible) issue is, that the device runs without any authentication or encryption.

Hi there and hi @MrEbbinghaus

I‘m also looking for a plug that can do energy monitoring and handle 16A.
So the P110M seems to me next to to the Meross plugs the best choice atm.
What I don’t like with meross is, that there is no official integration in Home Assistant (which is not such a big deal).
So I would like to go with tp link.

As far as I understood I can indeed use the energy monitoring in HA. The way to do it is:

  1. get the device via matter in HomeKit (so then the device also connects to wlan)
  2. install tp link integration
  3. find the device there - I guess via IP or something?
  4. enjoy

If that works i have two more questions

  1. Can i then change the VLAN and IP of the device?
  2. Can i delete the device from homekit and keep it in HA?

Thank you.

@fox-on-tour Yes, you only have to get the plug into your Wi-Fi. The TP-Link integration should be able to find the plug automatically.

To get it into the Wi-Fi you can provision it via matter like I said above or use python-kasa (see Command-line usage — python-kasa documentation) (which should also work with the non-matter variants of this plug or in situations where matter doesn’t work in your network.)

Addressing your questions:

  1. You should be able to delete the device from HomeKit afterwards. I just proposed this solution, because it is more user-friendly than using python-kasa.

  2. The plug gets its ip4 via DHCP, so IP and VLAN are configured in your router. I don’t know if you can configure a static IP on the device itself.
It also uses its mac address to get a link-local ipv6 address via SLAAC, if this is a concern for you.

Thank you so much for the details - this helps a lot. Looking forward to geht my first plug.

Home Assistant actually did not support the feature looking at the latest release:

I’m running HA 2024.10 since its release yesterday, but the Tapo P110M still only supports the on/off switch control. We have to wait for a firmware update of the plug.

On the Matter integration yes you will only see an on/off switch, update status and an Identify button for these plugs. But as @MrEbbinghaus mentioned, in the TP-link integration these plugs also show up with (what I believe) are all the other details ie. current consumption, etc. and another switch.

That’s how I’m using them.

The main reason we’ve not been able to add it to Home Assistant yet was because we didn’t had a product where we could actually test it :see_no_evil: . Meanwhile we have implemented and tested it with preliminary firmware for a plug from a company in the forefront of Matter adoption

Care to share what company and what plug?

Has to be the Eve Energy, they have a Matter 1.3 certified firmware, just not released yet, and they’re usually the reference for Matter smart plugs, they even worked with HA, SmartThings and others to add energy consumption via Matter before it was available as a standard feature in Matter.

So, what is the conclusion here? Does the Tapo P110M support energy monitoring via Matter over WiFi in Home Assistant at the moment? Or what exactly is missing?

Not yet via Matter because Tapo has to update the P110M firmware and make it Matter 1.3 compatible.

Go to the link in a previous comment and vote for the feature in TP-Link forums.

Hi,

I just bought a P110M with the goal to measure energy consumption of some electrical equiplement. Should have read this thread earlier

But anyhow, I tried to link the device through BLE by using the Matter Web UI. While this worked smoothly for a couple of Siegenia window handles, the Tapo refuses to connect. This is what I see in the logs:
The log says that the device is not supporting Thread but only WiFi  Unfortunately WiFI connection get stuck in the network connection check on my Android smartphone. Any ideas how to get the P110M connected?
Forget the above: the WiFi setup worked with the Tapo device - while it fails for the Siegenia handles.

All good.

Just saw an interesting post over on the TPLink forum from an admin, see link:

https://community.tp-link.com/en/smart-home/forum/topic/672228?replyId=1439494

The interesting part of what they mention are these bits:

Based on the information we currently have, there is no platform that supports energy monitoring functionality under the Matter 1.3 standard yet.

and

We have noticed that some users have mentioned that Home Assistant now supports Matter 1.3. However, as we have learned, Home Assistant has only upgraded to the Matter 1.3 SDK development framework, which allows other developers to create Matter 1.3 functionalities on the platform. They’ve not yet implemented the specific plug power monitoring feature included in the Matter 1.3 standard. The new device types and advanced features defined in the Matter 1.3 standard will need to be gradually adapted based on demand.

So i wonder - based on the latter quote, is there more work HA need to do to enable this power monitoring spec?

They just have outdated information, both Home Assistant and SmartThings fully support smart plugs with Matter 1.3 energy reporting since early October. I guess they were not aware.

The good news in the Tapo forum thread is this part:

“Since the CSA Alliance released the Matter 1.3 standard in May 2024, TP-Link has been actively developing and certifying multiple Tapo models for Matter 1.3 functionality. As this is a new standard framework, adaptation will take some time. If all goes smoothly, we anticipate releasing firmware that supports Matter 1.3 by the end of 2024.”
