The Current State of MyQ - From the codeowner

Their response is clearly “wallet” stuffing. It is no coincidence this tesla subscription and IFTTT extra premium subscription charges came out at the same time as the implementation of the cloudflare protection. They are closing off any “free” attempts to control their device. You either have to see their adds, or pay a subscription to operate the door. Security is not the reason (reference the top post of this thread).

that tweet link is broken. They deleted the tweet lol.

I have the exact same openers (two of them) and I’m trying to get them working with HA again…I have no bridge devices at the moment. Do you think this is functionally the same as what you have, even though it’s the 821LMC vs your 821LMB?

That device is linked to from the MyQ integration documentation here in Home Assistant and it says Home Assistant can speak directly to that device using HomeKit protocol, no MyQ cloud required.

If that’s true, I’m a little confused as to why everyone isn’t just getting this bridge and using HomeKit vs all these more hacky third party solutions. What’s the catch with the MyQ bridge + HomeKit?

EDIT: I went ahead and ordered a 821LMC so I guess I’ll find out if it works!

Why buy a 3rd-party solution versus 821LMC? …because why would anyone want to give more money to a company that is trying to block API access?

His model is not 821lmb, it is 819lmb. Nothing in the 821 specs or install guide even mentions homekit that I could find. Why do you think it is homekit compatible?

Did you miss the press release from Chamberlain that I posted above? Here it is again: Chamberlain Group | A Message About our Decision to Prevent… (emphasis mine)

This decision was made so that we can continue to provide the best possible experience for our 10 million+ users, as well as our authorized partners who put their trust in us. We understand that this impacts a small percentage of users, but ultimately this will improve the performance and reliability of myQ, benefiting all of our users.

There’s no mention of security. Which violates rule number 43 of IT change management: when you have a change that will restrict access, claiming it is a security issue (even if it isn’t) will drastically improve perception of that change.

I’m betting it was a rush to judgement. The link on that page that they followed to the 819LMB redirects to the 821LMC.

821LMB is a different, non-homekit device. You need HomeKit compatibility to use HA HomeKit Device integration. I’d cancel your order. As mentioned, I used an 819LMB. It is designed to connect the openers to HomeKit.

I recently purchased a house with a couple of these Chaimberlain devices, I needed to call support for a limit issue, the support guy says open the camera … :ah yes, I see you now!". How F***ing creepy.

I am done with all these cloud companies, they have no idea how to operate nor run a company, they are clueless, and yes I agree with you, thye are always tryign to add an advert for something they are selling.

I have added relays to the buttons - which HA can send commands to and I added tilt sensors to each door so I can determine the status as well. I have not looked at your other proiduct suggesstions yet - but will do so.

Also, to me, these companies are tracking your location for everything you do, they need location services turned on for their apps to work, I am fed up.

Yo that’s messed up. I’m already sorry that my house came with MyQ openers. I’m super glad I don’t have their cameras. Although I’m sure most any cloud company can do this. I’m curious about my Unify setup since it’s using local storage and I have remote access disabled.

Except the doorbell, I block all my cameras from the internet and connect to them internally through ONVIF. I wouldn’t let cameras or microphones access the cloud for anything in the world.

This is because the company behind MyQ has discontinued the HomeKit-compatible bridge more than one year ago.
As such the product does not even exist on their website these days, as such they redirect you to a different bridge product that has to go through their MyQ cloud, which encourages you pay extra, so that they can see your garage door status, open/close history, camera feed, your geolocation, etc.

Wow. Makes perfect business sense, right? Why would any company not trying to maximize revenue?

Literally just ordered a new liftmaster last night as part of a garage door replacement. I had insisted it work with myQ given the integration I have. I just called them and told them to put a hold on the order. They recommended a Genie lift that works with Alladin connect. Anyone have any experience with those?

Looks like Aladdin Connect is supported by HA: Aladdin Connect - Home Assistant

So glad I ditched MyQ a couple months ago! 1ch inching board ($10) flashed to esp home, wired to dry contacts. RF door sensor ($5), and sonoff rf bridge ($15 - already had one, so really free). Problem solved! Luckily, my dry contact wires were already run to same place as wall button. I read you can also solder relay to a garage remote instead.

Why is everyone looking at expensive solutions like homekit?

Completely agreed. It would be so easy to introduce an API key that users can generate and use, and they could even keep bot protection on. But no, they won’t do that.

The track records so far are better - it break less than MyQ, but it did break and cause users scrambling.
Plus it is still going through cloud, which users have zero control of.

So if I were you, I’d make my decision based only on support and reliability of the GDO operations itself (open and close multiple times per day, for 10 or 20 years, without much maintenance), regardless of whatever smart or integration being offered / possible.
And once I got my GDO, I would plan to integrate myself with my own local solution, whatever that might be.

I’ve always felt the writing was on the wall regarding the myq integration, so it’s hard to get too upset over what I thought would happen anyway. I feel the same about any cloud integration not offically sanctioned - assume it will break tomorrow.

Alladin Connect is still cloud based and from what I can tell unauthorized, so is subject to the same shenanigans.

For myself, I will remain liftmaster/chamberlain + ratgdo.

Genie is the easier to deal with locally using generic relays and such. I would like to say I would change, but the generic solutions don’t give anywhere near the same functionality as ratgdo with Chamberlain. It looks like the new v2.5 ratgdo board with some hacks comes pretty close for genie openers, but still falls short.

Hey kaldeck,

As a novice or even non-schematic reader. I’m trying to replicate your D1 mini board but could do with some help. I’m an alright solder-er, but want to make sure I get this right.

Could I help you design some visuals of the d1 boards to help others piece it together and solder it? Happy to do the visuals work and provide it for your repo.

Want to make this easier for amateurs that might not want to wait for back orders to be shipped (like me!).

I’m excited to receive my ratgdos and add some conditional logic to lock the remotes out at night. Wife likes to use her side of the garage for projects, and parks outside
