Not sure if Alexa is the same as Google, but Google requires you to give a verbal pin to control devices like locks and covers
Alexa does the same, but you donât get that w/ a switch entity like Rutherford is suggesting
Ah good point, sounds like a good use case for the switch as cover helper
Actually YoLink has an Alexa skill that allows just that. Iâve made the voice command less obvious than just âopen garage doorâ. LOL I just thought âAlexa, Tell Hal to Open the Pod Bay Doorsâ would be great!
well, if you use yaml, you can expose the switch as a cover or a lock. But thatâs only available if you use yaml to define whatâs exposed to alexa.
Iâve thought of this before. I donât have my garages connected to google assistant for the same reason. But it didnât really hit me until I wanted to put a google home in the garage but thought about it for a second first. These devices could pick up a mumble or a whisper so you might not even have to yell from outside. The end-game is to switch to using selfhosted Genie or something though. Iâve got my automations down to to where I donât use the voice assistant much outside of playing music across the house, and the occasional light command or timer. The only time iâm needing to open garage doors without being next to the button, is if a friend arrives, in this case Iâm checking the camera in home assistant, and i have the garage door buttons on the footer of the garage camera for quick access.
I have one in my garage, if someone yells to turn on the lights, whatever. Iâll just turn them off when I figure it out. But generally, yes, I only use them for music now as well.
One day friends came over and one asked the Google Assistant to âturn on EVERYTHINGâ. Slightly in shock that person subsequently went to ask to turn off everything.
This is how I learned to configure the entities HA exports to Google Assistant correctly. Obviously not before turning (among a million other things) my water shutoff and PiHole Adblocking back on
Tailwind has always had MyQ customers but now theyâre moving in truckloads. Could it be because Tailwind supports Home Assistant, HomeKit, CarPlay, Alexa, Google Home, Android Auto, ST, Hubitat, Crestron, Control4, provide an open local control API and a free adaptor that allows operation with MyQ?
All without subscriptions, and rated #1 by WireCuter for the last 4 years
Question i have is, if you have Ring, you can link the MyQ and Ring together to get status. I wonder why we cant see that MyQ status from the Ring MQTT data? i looked and i dont see it at all. i guess maybe this is a better question to ask in the Ring MQTT forum. but just thought iâd bring that up as well. if we cant talk to myq directly then get the data from another integration.
Hopefully a quick question â if you have a Ratgdo device, are there any install videos that show how to integrate it as a replacement for the MyQ integration? For example, is it a function of just adding the Ratgdo device to the home network and can it be wired off of an existing Liftmaster/Chamberlain wall switch (that opens and closes garage), etc?
I just bought 1 to check it out. It appears to run esphome, so youâd integrate it via esphome integration. Itâll show up as a wifi device.
@petro great - thanks for the insight. Also I noticed the Ratgdo v2.5 with integration kit SKU comes with a USB power adapter, 3â USB cable and 12" of wiring to connect ratgdo to the garage door opener. Is it safe to assume this wiring connects from the ratgdo unit to the physical, overheard garage door opener unit itself? And are you aware of any instructions on which wiring connections to make?
EDIT: appears this diagram addresses the bypass wiring - https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/4663918/276749741-fe82ea10-e8f4-41d6-872f-55eec88d2aab.png
Yes, itâs just low voltage wire. You can get it anywhere. You can even cut it from your current connections if you have extra cabling wrapped around your garage door opener (from the other buttons you have).
Errrm, you are just wrong. While the entire garage door opener itself is not patented, many essential things to creating a competitor that seem really basic are. Hereâs Chamberlain suing TTI and Ryobi to stop them from entering the market, and winning:
Hereâs one with Genie winning a lawsuit in regards to a patent on opening a garage door remotely:
Thanks for sharing those email addresses. I sent them an email explaining why I prefer to use HA vs their app (better integration with other devices, automation, notifications, etc) and how theyâre pushing an entire community away from their products.
Youâre chatting with a low level support rep who probably doesnât even directly work for them. They have a script to follow and theyâre unable to drive any change.
Iâm pre-ordering Tailwind IQ3⌠They support HAâŚ
Good bye myQ⌠Iâm done with it. While everything Home Automation is moving to flexibility and API based approach, locking down an API has no value and good luck to their MBAs sitting in a corner office and making âreally good (???)â decisions.
I think this may be the same issue Iâm having with the Rheem EcoNet plugin now too.
Just want to post a big thank you to the effort youâve gone through to maintain this integration.
It is certainly just a convenience to me right now to be able to integrate my garage doors in to Home Assistant, but it is such a valuable capability to have them in my all-in-one smart home system.
At the end of the day, I was disappointed in having to rely on a cloud solution anyway, so this is just giving me the push to go to something more local anyway. Its just a shame I spent such a significant amount on these garage door openers to have to transition to something with the capability that I originally bought them forâŚ
