The need to backup...and knowing how to restore

Yesterday I had my moment that most fear…while tinkering around in HomeAssistant it went offline. I rebooted several time by pulling the plug, connected to harddisk to a linux computer to see if there was something wrong. But as I have limited linux skills I decided to take the radical approach. Reformat my SSD and do a restore of my daily backup.

Learning 1:
Reinstalling Hassio was a breeze although it’s so much faster when you download the image first and not install it from the url.
Learning 2:
Use a blueprint to backup

Learning 3:
Trying to upload my backup timed out. Checking here told me to install samba and copy the backup using that…worked like a charm
Learning 4:
be patient for the restore to take place

All in all a horror moment became a nice learning experience. Seeing that I only lost a couple of hours of data related my smart meter was not so bad. I have to say that HA is a great product and seeing that so many people contribute to it (including the daily backup blueprint) is fantastic.

Kudos to all that make this a great product! I’m deeply impressed and grateful that even in moment of horror a solution is always close.

Just my 2 cents…
Regards

There are quite a few options for creating snapshots automatically and copying them off your system. See:
