It is physically nonsens to talk about an “Verbrauch”.
Because:
The first rule of the thermodynamics says":
In a closed system the amount of energy is always the same.
So energy is never “used”, it is only transferred to a different form.
So change it in the code everywhere it is written as “Verbrauch” to “Umsatz”.
Energieverbrauch is the commonly used term for energy usage. I’ve never heard ‘Energieumsatz’ used in anything other than academic papers and afair, it relates to biology.
The term is perfectly adapted and should not be changed.
This would be true for anything (water, toiletpaper, air, etc.) as everything just transitions to something else, so the word “Verbrauch” would be useless.
Even though you may be right about the content, “energy conversion” / “Energieumsatz” is a word that, as @HeyImAlex already mentioned, would not be used in common usage outside of an academic or technical context. So the current translation is absolutely fine and should not be changed.
As mentioned, it’s colloquially not wrong. HA isn’t physics software.
Consumption and production makes sense from a commercial point of view (for one) and are compact terms that illustrate intent. If you just say conversion then you have no idea what that direction is.
Do you really think it would be more helpful to say “you’ve converted chemical potential energy to electrical energy which in turn became heat (kinetic) energy”? I mean, technically that’s what happens when you’ve converted energy in a battery via an inverter to boil some water, but how is it more helpful or even more accurate in that context? As humans we don’t think and operate on that level in daily life.
Consumption makes sense if you think of it as “using energy to do work”. In your typical electrical grid, energy (normally) gets produced elsewhere and then transported to you. While that is technically also not correct, its practical to think about it this way. There are a multitude of conversions along the way anyway.
PS: If you really want to be pedantic you might know that conservation of energy holds locally only. As far as we know an expanding universe increases energy while keeping energy density constant.
PPS: In my native language our word is essentially identical to the German word: energieverbruik (or elektrisiteitsverbruik).
