Thermostat values and options explaination

I’m confused about some of the parameters for working with climate control thermostats. When calling set_temperature there are two optional values that I’m unsure about. What do the values for target_temp_high and target_temp_low do and why would I set them?

My goal is to just set the mode to Auto and change the temperature setpoints based on forecasted high and low temps for the day. Is there a way to control the range that the system flips between cool and heat? I am using the in-development Honeywell Lyric integration here. I am curious about others’ experience with the Auto mode feature of a thermostat.

target_temp_high and target_temp_low are the values used for the auto mode. These are the max and min temps that are acceptable meaning the heat/ac won’t run if the temp is between them.

That is what I was hoping for. Does that mean that I can leave off the temperature value when in Auto mode and just set the target high/low temps?

I believe so. Pretty sure that’s what I am doing.
