Tracking a mobile phone

When someone visits my house, I want certain lights to turn on, and turn off again when she leaves. I don’t really have access to her phone, so there’s little I can do.

As far as I can ascertain, the bluetooth tracker integration doesn’t work because Python has changed.

I was wondering what options are left please?

I can possibly force a particular IP to be given to her MAC address and then check if that IP responds to ping?

Grateful for thoughts and advice.

If you cannot do anything to the phone - the only real solution is something on your network side.

Many routers allow for tracking inside HA of network devices.

You could theoretically ID the device that way (I use UniFi network gear and do this for a couple of friends, when thier device joins my network, I can see thier device on my router and the UniFi integration marks a device tracker home)

This will be dependent on the capability of your gesr.

Thanks. I pinned the MAC address to an IP and apparently there is “ping” now in the integrations, so as long as her phone responds to ping… she’ll get a fixed IP address, respond to ping and the automation will see her and turn the light on… and off again when she leaves.

Be careful, some modern phones can join a wifi network with a rotating MAC and next time she shows up - boom new device. There are ways to combat it if that happens just know it could be an issue…

Thanks for the heads up. Already hit the issue. She’s using Apple so I just turned that feature off for my wifi.
