I have issues with Zigbee temperature sensors losing connection. I have plenty of IKEA Trådfri devices, so I actually have a fairly large network and good coverage. However, the temperature sensors are connected to a separate network since they are not related to IKEA. They communicate with my SkyConnect adapter, which is connected to my Home Assistant setup.
Is it possible to move (some of) the IKEA devices to my other network? If so, I could use a lamp, for example, as a repeater.
And if possible, can I also move IKEA motion detectors and use them as well? (I’m thinking it would be easier since the lamp I’m considering moving is currently paired with this motion detector).
If the temperature sensors are battery-powered - not routers, in other words - you’re absolutely right in thinking that they need routers to support them. You could move a motion sensor with the lamp, but you’ll have to do the binding again.
It sounds as if your SkyConnect is trying to link directly with the sensors, which is why they’re losing connection. The number of devices a coordinator can connect with directly is limited and they would all have to be quite close to it (feet rather than yards).
There’s no reason why you shouldn’t try pairing some of the Trådfri Zigbee routers with SkyConnect, but they’d have to be removed from their existing network first - they can’t belong to both - and you would have to move several of them. One won’t be enough. Normally one would build a strong network of routers first, then add the end devices.
There’s a danger you’ll end up with two weak networks. Why not move everything?
In my “HA Zigbee” network, I have two devices acting as routers + an IKEA repeater which is connected to that network. But that covers to little of my house+garage.
Yes, maybe that’s best, to migrate all of the IKEA devices and in the long run, power down the IKEA gateway. I don’t know if there is any downside to this? Except that it will be quite a lot of work to migrate them all.
Will all devices work? I have:
17 bulbs
1 driver (for PAX)
5 outlets
4 remote controls
6 motion sensors including PAX
Would be an interesting read if anyone can recommend an article or video of someone doing this migration.
Moved 3 bulbs, 1 motion sensor and 3 outlets. Was very easy, removed from IKEA app, set device in pairing mode and added from HA.
One strangeness though; my SONOFF temperature SNZB-02 doesn’t work and all IKEA equipment is isolated, doesn’t show that it’s connected to anything. Is this normal?
Re-did pairing from the SONOFF-sensor and it works. Used “Add from device” from the nearest bulb and now 10 minutes later there are connections all over on the visualization map
