TV will turn off, won't turn on

Hello there all,

Been playing around with HA for a little while now. First with a docker image, but since a few days I’m using a dedicated small PC. Lots of fun! But I hit a snag…

I’ve been googling around but I couldn’t find anything compared to my problem. I found out abouth WoL, and trying to figure out how to get that working on my button for my Samsung TV (UE43DU7150KXXN).

here’s the code:

type: custom:mushroom-media-player-card
entity: media_player.43_crystal_uhd
secondary_info: state
tap_action:
  action: perform-action
  perform_action: wake_on_lan.send_magic_packet
  target: {}
  data:
    mac: e8:aa:cb:8e:57:4c
hold_action:
  action: none
double_tap_action:
  action: none
media_controls:
  - on_off
name: Samsung TV
card_mod:
  style: |
    ha-card {
      border-radius: 0pt;
      --ha-card-background: '00000000';
    }

Maybe someone can point me to the right direction?

Thanks in advance!

Are you connected over a wired or wireless connection on the TV? Often you need to use ethernet for waking up to work.

Do you have the wake_on_lan: line in configuration.yaml? You need to, and restart HA.

Most TVs come on in standby mode. You may need to send the equivalent of a “standby” button press before you can connect - some sort of IR blaster…

Other possible way, I’m using:

My Samsung TV goes ON automatically, after power loss. So I use a smart plug and that works just fine.

@deviantintegral It’s wireless.

@nickrout Yes, but no dice.

I have a cheap TCL TV in my room. I had similar issues. I could control it if the TV was on, but if it was off I could not wake it with Home Assistant or Google Assistant. I tried wake on LAN and adjusting all power settings to try to keep the TV ‘awake’ even if it was ‘off’. I pinged the TV every 30 seconds (which weirdly seemed to work for about a day). Nothing worked. I contacted support and they confirmed the ‘smarts’ would not work if the TV was off.

I haven’t gotten around to it yet, but my next plan was to try a CEC enabled Chromecast or Firestick that could be used to wake it up.

@jackjourneyman No clue what you mean?

@BebeMischa I might try that approach! I’ve got a few smartplugs laying around, I’ll try that tomorow!

When they are on standby some TVs disable the network connection. You may have to get it out of standby with an IR command before you can do anything else. (Which makes WoL redundant, of course.) TVs I’ve seen mentioned include Philips, LG, Sony and Samsung, but I don’t know which models.

I believe you can sometimes change the TV’s settings to stop this happening. There are a few posts scattered round the forum, but it seems to be a bit of a can of worms.

Smartstart enables network on some TVs. On Samsung I think eco mode must be off. All the “energy efficient” modes turn off ethernet/wifi
