UK 13A Rated Smart Plug On High Power Devices - eg Tumble Dryer?

Hello all.

Had a browse around the forums and can’t find an answer.

Based in UK - picked up a couple of Smart Plugs made by Meross - The MSS310UK which also has power monitoring.

Rate at 13A - so i make that maximum wattage of 3120W

Question is - is it safe to run a high power device such as washing machine or tumble dryer off a smart plug? Already running fridge / freezer in kitchen and chest freezer in garage so i can monitor power consumption.

Both tumble dryer and washing machine are rated around 2300w each - and each would be running off their own smart plug on their own socket.

Many thanks in advance.

I run a 3Kw heater off a tp-link hs100 socket. Ok so its a wifi socket but its rated 13amps. Been doing so for about 6 months now and its been fine.

I’ve got other zigbee and zwave power sockets that I use. The only warning I’d give is some of the brands for some reason rate themselves at 2800 watts instead of the full 3000 watts, no idea why.

FYI, running my heater is the worst case scenario for a power socket because the full 3kw load is present at the moment the relay in the socket switches on the power, which can cause arcing and surges however as I said its handled it just fine.

Bear in mind with your washing machine there will be literally no load as your socket switches on and off so that’s actually better.

Hi

For short or intermittent periods the Meross are OK but I used it for a 3kWh immersion heater and the Meross plug fused with the immersion plug, created a foul smell and stopped working. The first time it happened I assumed it was a faulty plug but having had it now happen twice I’m not prepared to use them for high power units again. That said, a washing machine probably does not run at 3kwh for very long so it might not be long enough for the plug to overheat
