Unable to progress with google assistant, beyond the config documentation

Hi - I have been trying to understand where I have gone wrong. I have completed all the steps in that guide, and have added my implementation into Google Assistant, and I can see the various switches/scripts filling into Google Assistant under “Control your home”. But there seems to be a near total-scarcity of documentation for what follows this.

Unlike others - when I speak to my Google Home (running on Pi, under te same Google account), I never get the impression that it’s even linked. I did rename my 2-3 times to get away from my phone googling it as a phrase instead… where as Flex TV (for example) is definitely recognised as an associated device.Nothing I ask is met with anything more hopeful than “sorry I am not sure how to help”. I called it ‘Mi Casa’ and try saying “Talk to Mi Casa”, or “Tell Mi Casa to turn on the heater” and I get the standard confused response. Everyone else seems to leap straight into controllng their Home Assistant instance - but I cannot seem to trigger a single switch/script via Google Home/Assistant.

Is it really supposed to “just work”? Or am I missing something here? I did not use the HASS.io cloud option but I am not aware of what else I should be doing instead…?

Thanks for any hints you can give - Matt

OK I have made progress…

I think I had too many elements (scripts, switches etc.) Eventually I tried collecting a huge list of these, and explicitly disabled all except those I wanted to start with (I resorted to this as using the expose_by_default: false left me with nothing!?).

Now that I have single, very definite entries (under Google Assistant) for the actions I want, things just started to work.

I can understand this behaviour from Google Assistant in hindsight, but an error from Google Home more like “there are too many potential options for your command” would have been much more useful…!

I think I will leave this thread here in case someone has some great documentation or experiences to share.

Thanks
Matt
