Unable to update core since 2024.11.1

Hi,

I have been running Home Assistant for some years, first on a RPi Zero, then a RPi2 and currently on an RPi3B+. I have been unable to update the HA core since 2024.11.1. The update always fails with a 404 image not found error. All other updates for add-ons and operating system all work fine. I found a post mentioning that this could be caused by lack of space, but I’m running on a 32GB SD card, and df shows a whole list of entries with a maximum space used of 22%.

How can I resolve this and get my installation back on track with current updates?

Thanks,
Ned

Try to stop all addons before updating.

Your RPi3 is limited on RAM and with each update of HA and extra features added it gets more and more limited, so you are need to free up some to update.
Consider this a warning that your RPi3 will soon be unable to run your HA setup.

Thanks WallyR. I’ll try that.

I’m impressed. My rpi3b+ has struggled with updates for about the past year. I just restore a backup to the rpi from my x86 HA setup.

Unfortunately, that didn’t work. My RAM usage was about 72% running normally, and down to 66% with the add-ons stopped. Is there a simple explanation of why the core update takes so much RAM, while other updates like the OS update don’t have a problem?

Anyway, I’ve ordered a RPi 4, but I’m not looking forward to transferring the system. :worried:

Thanks,
Ned

Hi @Ellcon, You probably needn’t be too impressed, as other than the integrations that seem to be installed by default, I’m only running ZWave with two devices, and a custom integration that controls 433 MHz power switches. I’m not exactly overworking it.

Did you get it to install? My install went ok, just took a few hours. Next time there is an update I will try and find what the issue is with that.

Hi,
Just to add to the confusion, while I was in my installation looking up the z-wave confuguration, I tried the update again, and it worked!

Anyway, I have my shiny new Pi 4, just waiting for an HDMI adapter. At least both Pis will be on the same release when I try to migrate the installation.

Hi,

Just to conclude this, I set up the new RPi4. I turned off the add-ons, did a full backup on the RPi3 and downloaded it to my PC. I then booted the RPi4, and selected “Restore from Backup” on the onboarding screen. I had the frequently reported problem of the restore taking forever (with a 9MB file!), but following advice in the forum, I refreshed the browser and was greeted with a login screen. I logged in, adjusted the network settings to suit my environment and shut down to install the RazBerry Z-Wave controller. When I powered up, everything was back to normal: The dashboard was as expected and all add-ons were working. The only thing I had to do was power-cycle a Z-Wave Multisensor to get it noticed.

All in all, a much less painful process than I was expecting. Now if only they’d fix the restore never finishing issue… :grinning:
