I have a weird situation - I have both a Unifi UDM SE and a Unifi NVR. All of my cameras are connected to the Unifi NVR through Unifi Protect (latest version as of today - 5.3.48). When I try to use the Unifi Protect integration in Home Assistant I get an “Unknown error occurred”??
I’ve setup a local user on the NVR, given it Super Admin permissions - still no joy.
But here is the weird thing - I installed Unifi Protect on my UDM SE, and then removed one of the cameras from my NVR and adopted it into my UDM SE through Unifi Protect, then used the Unifi Protect integration in Home Assistant and connect to my UDM SE - bingo, it all works!
I’m running the same version of Unifi Protect on both devices, I just don’t get it.
Anyone have any idea what I might be doing wrong? Some sort of config on the NVR that I need to add/change?
IIRC there is something a little unintuitive with this setup. Then NVR needs to adopt the udm. Then you can use the the udm user to log into protect and see all the cameras.
Unintuitive? It’s the most basic standard Unifi setup going?? I think your suggestion of the NVR adopting the UDM is incorrect - I think you mean the UDM adopting the NVR, which I have already done. Therefore Unifi Protect is shown in the UDM dashboard, but of course it is being run on the NVR.
Like I said this is a standard unifi configuration - absolutely nothing unusual here. But I just cannot connect - I keep getting “Unknown error occurred”??
I don’t understand what you mean? The NVR adopting the UDM is not an option - the only option is to “merge” the two consoles and the precedent is the UDM control plane.
If you are getting confused with the Protect app, then I can confirm that Unifi Protect is ONLY running on the NVR - there is no Unifi Protect running on the UDM. When you have an NVR the best practice (as per Ubiquiti) is to run Unifi Protect on the NVR and NOT on the UDM.
Please show me where/how the “NVR can adopt the UDM”, I’m happy to be proved wrong - but I just don’t see how this makes any sense??
Yeah - that article explains the merge process of a UDM and UNVR (specifically migrating cameras from Unifi Protect), whereby you migrate from Unifi Protect in UDM to Unifi Protect in UNVR. As I explained right at the very beginning that’s exactly what I have.
