I am thinking to build Unraid server with Intel i5 CPU.
Under one server run by Unraid I want to setup dockers with:
Plex Server
Home Assistant
InfluxDB
Is it a good idea?
Plex transcoding needs more resources and because of that, I am afraid about HA efficiency.
Perhaps, someone has this installation at home?
Main purpose is to have these systems under one installation.
My personal advice is to physically separate all of them. I run a dedicated PI for Plex, a dedicated PI for HA and a dedicated general purpose database server. At approx. $50 a crack for a Pi3 it’s not a big deal and frankly, with the yo-yo status of Homeassistant, do you want your entire system dependent on it?
It depends on how good your linux-fu is. You could run into IO contention if you don’t setup something properly, though I doubt it unless you’re streaming Plex to the internet at high rates.
I run HASS, Influx, and a bunch of other stuff on one i3 box with 4GB RAM. No issues.
I think its better having a single solid i5 box than 3 Raspberry Pis. HASS doesn’t need disk IO and you can always give it higher CPU priority or lower plex’s.
I currently have my HA, Netdata, Nextcloud, PiHole, Emby Server, Sonarr, Radarr, Deluge, 3 separate websites that I host along with a few other dockers like LetsEncrypt and MariaDB running on my Unraid Server 24/7. It has an i7 CPU with 40gb of ram.
I’ve been running this setup for almost a year now and haven’t really noticed any performance issues on HA. The highest I’ve seen my CPU load get up to is around 82% with 5+ remote video streams playing at the same time.
I’ve thought about separating my Emby Server to its own Unraid box but haven’t really had any reason to do so yet.
On a side note… I used to have my HA on an Raspberry Pi 3 and noticed a WORLD of difference when making the switch over to Unraid. The speed at which my HA reboots, comes back online, and how fast everything runs is astronomical compared to the Rpi3
I have an intel i7 cpu, 40gb of ram, 14tb of hdd space, 240gb ssd for the cache, 2 nvidia gtx 660 Gfx cards and I believe an asrock mobo but I can’t remember off the top of my head. If you decide to take the plunge and upgrade just shoot me a pm and I’d be more than happy to help you get up and running with unraid.
