Update 1 year old HA instance

Hi,
I have the following HA situation at the moment:

Home Assistant Operating System 12.3 and Home Assistant Core 2024.5.4

Is it safe to just update to the current version?
Which to update first? HAOS or Core?

Any hints would be great, I could not find any compatibilty information or minimal version requirements online. For either component.
The system is with a relative on remote location in a diffrent country, so this update failing would be… not good.

Thanks!

Do a Backup test it that you can open it

Take the Leap jump in

Off top of head think there a couple of database update and they mite take a lonnnnnnng ti fix them self.

You can do incremental update by updating to last available version of each month

If any issues occur you know where to start looking

And YES. Backup before start

What kind of hardware are you running HA on?

You could use a backup to restore that on a clean install at onboarding but TBH I don’t know what the difference would be between my idea and updating with every release between then and now…

Maybe someone else can comment on that.

Also:

  • be aware about the breaking changes
  • don’t leave your HA without updating that long, especially if it’s accessible from the internet
