Update 2024.8.3 to 2024.9.1 not working

All was working with 2024.8.3 on my trusty old RPi3b with SSD running HAOS. Then I updated to 2024.9.1 and tried to restore from backup. It did not work. HA would not boot.

Started from scratch. This time I let it go through with the onboarding. Yay success!. Uploaded my backup and hit restore. Never finished.

Back to square one. I can do partial restore but that is no good as it doesn’t give me my dashboards. This process has been repeated several times over the past few days trying different combinations without success.

My question is what is the point of having a backup if it will not restore?

Rant over. Any helpful suggestions would be most welcome. Thank you.

First off if you want more help you will need to provide some information about your hardware spec and stuff.

second backups do work (most of the time). They will not work if there are vreaking changes between the versions you are restoring.

Thirdly, why are you using a backup as part of the upgrade process?

There are no obvious reasons why a restore would fail unless you are using an external database

  1. Hardware setup: Rpi3b + SSD + HAOS + ~40 devices mostly Sonoffs on ESPHome

  2. Didn’t see any breaking changes that affected my setup 2024.8.3 - 2024.9.1

  3. First time I just updated to 2024.9.1 as usual. But since it would not complete the update after several hours and sytem reboot did not work, I had no option but to start from scratch. HA gives the option to create a new account or restore from backup. Restoring from backup at this point or after creating an account did not work.

The backup was on Google Drive through HA addon. In HA> Backups I uploaded this backup and restored from there.

No need for a new account when restoring from the landing page. Just hit restore and use you old account when complete.

If using a new account your HA will not have details of that account and you won’t be able to log in/

That is what I said I did in the first line of my first post. Restore from backup did not work.

How long should I wait for this to be done? An hour, 2,4?

How big is the backup? On a rPi 3 it will take a bit anyway, but if that backup is large then it can take quite a while. If you have console access you can look to see the status.
