Hi
I am looking for a budget ups for my Intel Kit NUC7PJYH. We have very rare power cuts here, which usually last for 2-3 hours at most. More often it happens to have a power cut for some minutes, but yesterday we had 3 power cuts within an hour!
So can someone suggest for a UPS since I don’t know anything about them?
bonus question: right now I have a spare small ups (they gave me with my router) which outputs 9 or 12v.
Until I buy the new one could I use it?
I have a small UPS attached to my HA server (APC brand). I’d recommend APC since I only had good experiences so far, especially the Back-UPS models. You can get the smallest model for ~90€. That one (700 VA) should be sufficient to power that NUC for maybe 1-2 hours I guess, depending on the load and whether you have an SSD or HDD. If you want to be sure to bridge > 2h you probably need a larger model.
In any case, what you should look out for is that your UPS is supported by some linux battery monitor (e.g., nut or apcupsd) so you can cleanly shutdown when the UPS runs out of juice.
Regarding your router UPS: The NUC apparently takes 12VDC as input, so you should be able to hook that one up directly (if your UPS is 12v). But I’m guessing that this won’t last you more than maybe half an hour.
Again, I guess any UPS will do, especially in this size they are essentially a battery with a box around them. You’ll probably be fine with taking any UPS that has a decent rating + at least a bit of power, as long as they have at least a supported USB or LAN connection.
