USB HDD boot on Raspberry Pi 3B+

Hi,

I own a Raspberry Pi 3B+. I want to boot hassio from an USB HDD or SSD drive.
I have tried numerous things but nothing works.

  1. USB flash drive boot. I used a SIGMA USB 3.0 32GB and put the hassio image on it. The disk did not boot. Then I tried the following: take a SD card, put bootcode.bin on it and even an timeout file. Now the USB flash drive boots!

So, I thought that I fixed it. But strange is that some users report the SD Card boot is not necessary. But i cannot get it to work without. The next thing I did was to try several HDD/SSD drives. I bought a new Samsung SSD T5 500GB USB 3.1. When I boot the Pi, the screen stays black and nothing happens. The green light on the Pi blinks 1 time. There is no light on the SSD so i cannot tell if there is activity or not. I do not think power is an issue, as I have read people got the T5 to work on the PI with raspbian. It seems an HASSIO issue to me.

I even tried slower HDD drives (Iomega eGo and WD My Passport, both HDD drives). With the HDD drives the screen does not turn black, just nothing happens.

Could someone please help me with this? I so much want this to work.
