Use case of HA on a boat

Can HA prompt at install time whether I’m installing for a boat instead of a house?

Areas on a boat should be different

Living room → Saloon or Main Cabin
Bedroom → V-Berth, Starboard/Port Cabins/Berths
Kitchen → Galley
Restroom → Head
Also there is Cockpit, Bridge, Foredeck, Aft Deck, Engine Room, Bilge, Lazarette, Anchor Compartment

And it would be nice if HomeAssistant could auto discover NMEA data sources of a boat.

Thanks

I’m kind of surprised: does Home Assistant really come with predefined areas? I think it should not make any assumptions at all. Otherwise the list would be long: Mobile home, shop, church, theater, windmill, escape room, … Sooo many places you can use Home Assistant. And then so many languages. What if you do not want areas at all? Most people will rename the rooms afterward anyway. My bedroom is not your bedroom.

Creating the right areas takes all of a minute to do by hand and you only do it once. Programming predefined home types can easily take days, and the code also needs to be maintained.

Areas are created by the user, and not at install time. You can name those areas anything you like yourself.

There should already be an NMEA integration, but I don’t think it in HACS

A very quick search brought up this and the github looks active.

This may also be of use to you Connecting Raymarine NMEA2k data to Home Assistant

I do not think so, but I think the Hue integration will pull any defined areas on the Philips Hue hub into HA.
Other integrations might do the same, like the ones for vacuum robots.

I confirm it works this way which can be quite annoying after a while as you might need to assign some entities at “other” rooms than the one predefined !
