Using an external timer in place of a physical switch

I have a Fibaro Single Switch that controls power to a light. It is connected up and works fine. So that people who don’t want to use the Home Assistant software can use timer controls on it, I have tried to connect up a digital timer to the S1 and L poles. The Fibaro is set for a toggle switch. With a standard toggle switch attached (without the digital timer attached) the Fibaro works fine. Turn the switch on, the Fibaro turns on.
Remove the toggle switch and connect the output of the digital timer to the S1 and L poles. Connect the input of the digital timer to the mains supply and it turns on. Set the digital timer output to “on” and the Fibaro doesn’t turn on.
It is possible that the software in the digital timer cannot cope with having 240V across the L and N of it’s output poles when the output is set to “off”.
Has anyone tried this, had the same problem, and understood what to do about it?
Thanks for your input.
