Using smart lamps with smart switches

Hello, there have been many threads on this subject, but I had to open a thread again because I couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for.

Since I do not have a good level of English, I will mostly use Google Translate, so please forgive me if I make any spelling mistakes. I have a smart lamp and a smart switch.

I don’t want to lose the features brought by the smart lamp. Also, I want the smart lamp to remain on power all the time (even if it is turned off via the switch). I have an idea, if I use a smart stage switch instead of a smart switch and connect the light directly to electricity, do you think this would be a logical solution?

If the lamps are cut off from power, when the power comes back on, the device will try to reconnect, thus delaying the check a little.

So, what I actually want is for the smart switch not to cut off the electricity, but only toggle the lamp via the homeassistant.

Do you think this makes sense, or does anyone have a better idea?

I have a smart switch that doesn’t switch a light, but it’s only used to initiate a cover opening or closing - so, in principle, this should work for you.

The only trouble I had was to get the switch to work - i.e. change the state in HA - without any load attached. The first switch I put in the wall box didn’t do that, the second - same brand, same model - did; no idea what was the difference.

Keep in mind:

  1. This probably requires a neutral wire in the wall box.
  2. You need a safe way to turn off power to the light fixture in case you need to switch the bulb, e.g. turn the power off at the circuit breaker.

This all assumes that you are familiar with working at 110V/230V and adhere to other safety procedures as well.

Hi Samet, welcome to the forum!

Either the switch that you use will control the light by controlling the electricity, or you use a switch which controls the light.
Wireless buttons (IKEA, Sonoff, …) are able to control the light without touching the electricity running to it.
AFAIK any wired smart switch will use the electricity to power itself + control (cut/provide) electricity OVER the wires that go to the light.

You need just to adjust two settings in the wall switch:

  • Detached mode (so that the a button press doesn’t control the internally connected relay). :control_knobs:
  • Power state for the relay set to always on. :zap:

Now the bad news as spoilered by @Nick4

Not any but many don’t offer that basic settings or might not expose this settings locally. :no_good_man:

In case you put your faith in matter you might find yourself forced to install some vendor app with trackers, register yourself with some email to finally be able to change to such a configuration:

Or, depending on your device, it may just not be supported in software at all (random ZigBee device?)… :put_litter_in_its_place:

Needless to say: If you have full control and ownership over your device you obviously can make use of such a setup (random esphome device): :trophy:
