Using Tado TRV as an automation trigger

Hi, I’ve got Tado Trv’s in most of my rooms. My kitchen gets particularly cold and I’ve got an electric, WiFi heater in there too. (Adax)

What I’d like to do is have the electric heater start heating when the tado Trv’s open to more than 50% or more, but I’ve been so far unable to do this. Has anybody any experience of using the Trv’s as a trigger? Photo included of what I’ve tried so far.

To be honest the sensor you are referencing to is probably the most useless one of them all exposed by tado.

It’s a guesstimate / calculation from tado that kind of means nothing as the actual valves have only 2 states, fully open and fully closed.

It’s a calculated based on how quickly the temp is rising or falling bases on your requested temp, so as temp at the trv rises quicker towards the requested temp this sensor value is seen to back off / reduce however as stated the valve is still full on / open.

I personally would try to use something else to trigger the elec heater like the trv temp sensor vs requested temp maybe.

Ah okay. I’m not fussed on which sensor i use to trigger, so happy to do away with that.

I’ll give your suggestion a go. Thanks.

“from tado that kind of means nothing as the actual valves have only 2 states, fully open and fully closed.”

Yeah, that’s what mine shows too.

I do feel that it at least shows some intent to call for heat, which wouldn’t be a bad trigger for the elec heater.

platform: numeric_state
entity_id: sensor.heating_heating
above: '50'

It works :grinning: one-minute delay

I am not saying it won’t work off of that sensor I am simply pointing out that it’s relatively meaningless as the valves are full open or full closed - nothing else
