Utility meter helper behavior at actual meter replacement

I’ve made a pulse counter for our gas meter, “attached” it to a utility meter helper, it’s working just fine, counts the pulses (0.01 m3/pulse). I used the calibrate service to set its value to the actual value of the physical meter. They’re tracking fine, the daily/weekly/etc. sums are also calculated. The helper has the net metering option disabled.

Now, what happens when the physical meter is replaced? I want the helper to track the new meter after the replacement. If I reset or calibrate the helper again to reflect the new dial state, will it affect the totals? I had to adjust it once a few ticks forward as I lost some ticks because of a config error on my part. It changed the totals, too (which was correct). But I’m not sure about decreasing the value via calibration or reset. The behavior is not documented. Could anyone shed some light on it? Thanks.
