Hi a bit of a loss here.
I had HA running on a rasberry pi 3 all was good except I was fed up of changing my SD card and slowed down considerably lately.
I have a windows server 2019 datacenter running 24/day so installed it there running VMware.
Have it installed but can’t get external connection to work.
I did do a restore from my previous installation.
In The name your instance will have on your network I changed it from my previous setup.
In my modem I added a port fowarding on port 8123 using the new name it found as the Ip address.
I checked using openport check and It doesn’t find the port open. If I reboot my rasberry Pi it finds the port open.
On the server I did try turning off firewall, same thing
Using Local IP address all is good.
In HA IPV4 is set to automatic
IP address is the one I use locally
DNS address there are 2, one with the gateway, other is the same as my modem.
Home assistant URL I have http://xxxxnamegivenxxxx.ddns.net:8123 which worked on Rasberry Pi install. I also tried using my external ip Address with :8123
Network adaptor set to auto configure.
In VMware I have the network card bridged.
In my server I do have blue iris running and no issues reaching externally.
Port used is found by open port checker.
Can anyone guide me. Been trying to figure it out and not working.
Was working great like mentioned on Rasberry pie bu not on vmware on my server
Tried opening the port 8123 on my modem for the Ip of Vmware and the server itself.
thanks
A bit confusing, so are you running HA as VM on VMware or Windows server (Hyper-V)?
Or you have it installed inside Windows serverdirectly, or perhaps as VM using VMware workstation?
Are you able to connect to HA instance from any other VM on VMware host or from any other PC in your network?
VM should have its own IP address assigned, different from VMware host… How is your netwoking in VMware configured?
Hi , I am running HA in VMware workstation 17 on windows server.
to be clear. I have windows server running. I installed VMware on it, then created a HA instance in VMware.
Yes I can connect to HA from other PC in the network and my android phone running home assistance app on android.
Just can’t connect remotely like I was able when it was running on a raspberry pi.
In Vmware I bridged ethernet card existing on server. Not much else I can configure.
In my modem I tried opening port 8123 in:
Ethernet adapter Ethernet: which is my server address
Ethernet adapter VMware Network Adapter VMnet1: which I saw with IPconfig
Ethernet adapter VMware Network Adapter VMnet8:
OK, so in this case it should work with 8123 port open for IP address you can access HA from local network. As it is bridged network, your VM should get VM specific IP address. You can check it from WMware, console view of your HA (disregard second IP on my screenshot, I have 2 NICs configured):
Also, as you made several modem configuration attempts, please make sure you have port 8123 opened for only IP address (most of modems/routers will warn if it is already in use, but I’ve seen cases where it was not the case).
One more thing; are you able to acces any other system on your local network from outside, using open port menthod? Asking this, as you might be behind CGNAT (depending on your provider) and then the problem is not in your configuration, but in the way the CGNAT works…
Hi, I already tried that address. Yes I deleted all instances I had, turned off the port from my raspberry pi which is actually disconnected so not in use in case it interfered and turned on only the address from screen shown
Yes I have blueiris on my server and can access remotely with an open port. Also yesterday I installed WolOn on my android, opened port 9 and tested and can turn on server remotely.
So so far tried one at a time opening ports on
Home assistant screen you mention which is actually the first I had tried yesterday.
Ethernet adapter Ethernet: which is my server address
Ethernet adapter VMware Network Adapter VMnet1: from Ip config
Ethernet adapter VMware Network Adapter VMnet8:
Hm, so seems like evrything you tried is OK… The last two things that comes to my mind are:
Are you trying http or https connection from outside? 8123 on HA is http port and you should try to connect thi way.
For any mysterious reason port 8123 is blocked by your provider. Have you tried to configure access with port redirection from any other port (like using one that works for you for blueiris) instead of open port?
Hi trying HTTP://
8123 should not be blocked as it was working on raspberry pi.
I tried turning it back on to see and it works through that.
I tried removing not only switching off the 8123 port open in my modem. Created using with internal address of the one installed through VMware rebooted the whole server , restarted HA and still can’t connect remotely.
Not sure how to use the port from blue iris to Home assistant. If I use that port I go to the blue iris page.
Really wierd
Hi and thanks for your help. Mystery solved.
For some reason the latest mods I did yesterday if I use the DDNS address internally from my house on other PC doesn’t work, but don’t care.
Yesterday as I left my house I noticed my alarm at my house got armed. I have an automation when I leave the house alarm gets armed.
I checked the HA companion app and I had access to HA. Yeah…
The only think I can think of that made the difference as I have tested with the companion app before to no success is either by turning off the port of 8123 linked to my raspberry pie install or completly removing it yesterday. Although that system is off as you Mirek mentionned the modem might not like having 2 open ports with 8123 even though linked to 2 different Ip addresses. So thanks for your help now I have a security question but probably better to start a new post. Thanks
