VPN Clients for HA

Are there any VPN clients for Home Assistant? I’ve been searching and have found several servers bit not clients.

What’s the use-case?

My HA instance is remote, about 250 miles away. I’m trying to automate my backups to my local NAS. I don’t see any other way other than to put it on a VPN and mount a local network drive. I want to schedule the VPN on just prior to the start of the backup, then off with automation. The router with the HA instance has a VPN client, but when it’s on, it’s on, no turning off. I don’t want the entire network to be on the VPN 24/7.

In that case have a look at zerotier, it’s free for low numbers of devices and has an addon.

Thanks. Seems like it will take a little bit of time to figure it out, but it seems to be the only solution. Fortunately both of my NAS support it and I was able to install on both NAS and the HA instance. I authorized all of them on the my.zerotier.com site, but nothing.

But it is a start. I’ll figure it out.

Thanks.

@sender thank you, working perfectly right now! I’m able to use automation to start and stop ZeroTier and use Samba Backup to make backups.

I appreciate the help!

Cool! Thx for letting me know and a lot of fun with it👍.

I can not find an integration called “zerotier”? Is there a vpn client as an integration?

It is in the Addon Store. You can get more info here

Thanks. Got it.

Seems zerotier clients can only connect to zerotier networks, but I already have another network I want to connect to. All I know about the network is a *.ovpn file and no way to use it with zerotier.

how did you guys manage to route traffic to the right container on the haos?
i want to implement a similar solution where I want to backup to a machine in a public cloud, I’m using Netbird but I can’t get routing to the VM ://
