I need a couple of electric wall-mounted convection heaters for my garage, mostly to act as anti-frost heaters. Obviously, I’d like something that is more or less compatible with Home Assistant.
Does anyone have any recommendations for something that will do the job?
I used a generic relay board running ESPHome, combined with some power contactors (mounted on the left side in the consumer unit shown above) to switch dedicated wired outlets wired up to some low-wattage tubular heaters:
This gives me 400w of heat (the purpose of my heating was only to keep the garage from freezing up in winter) controlled using a HA generic thermostat which takes its temperature from ceiling sensors mounted in the roof of the garage. We’ve had a cold snap here in the UK this week and it’s all worked perfectly, maintaining the garage at around 7C throughout, while outside temperatures dropped to around -4C (it doesn’t tend to get a lot colder than this here). The heaters are working quite hard, but they are set to 7C, where I’d probably be happy with 5C (which they’ll achieve with less effort):
I’m happy with this solution - probably happier than I would have been with some off-the-shelf heaters that would probably have been a nightmare to integrate well with HA.
I found a HJZ heater on Amazon which integrates to Smart Life, although I haven’t found an integration for that in HA yet… but it’s only day two of using HA so still a newbie!
It plugs in via a Tapo smart plug so I can measure the consumption directly, I have integrated that!
