Wall Tablet: Kindle Fire Battery Eliminator

My Kindle Fire 7’s battery has reached the end of its life. I use it as a wall tablet. For the past month it’s been off half the time it’s supposed to have been on, and now it’s just dead.

Does anyone know if it’s possible to eliminate the need for the battery altogether?

thanks

Does plugging it in not work?

Not sure how the Kindle handles it specifically, but a lot of tablets will not boot up with a dead or missing battery, even if plugged in. Sometimes you have to supply power through the battery connectors directly once you removed the pack, using the right voltage. Sometimes even that doesn’t work, if the battery management system is part of the battery pack itself. Some manufacturers do this on purpose to keep people from using third party aftermarket replacement batteries.

@daneboom, remove the battery (there are tutorials for that). If the tablet doesn’t boot up without it, then you may have to power it through the desoldered battery headers directly.

I just opened up my Kindle Fire 7 (9th gen) due to a bloated battery.

The battery itself is glued down heavily, therefore exercise caution prying it out. I ruptured the most outer shell by trying to get it out thinking that I was getting the glue off - thankfully didn’t puncture but that was very scary:

The Kindle Fire 7 unfortunately does not power on without the battery and only USB plugged in.

But since I survived getting the battery out, I got adventurous. I removed the battery protection circuit from the battery and plugged only that in. For that I cut off the top part of the battery, cut the two direct metal straps connecting into the battery pack itself and plugged in the remaining circuit board back into the tablet:

Closely monitoring my tablet for potential fire hazards in the next few days and weeks, but working fine so far.
