Hi all, bought one of these off Amazon, wired it in and got an electric shock off the aerial (you can touch the inner core where it’s been cut).
Removed it for testing, with only the Live and Neutral connected it’s still the same - the aerial has a potential difference of 240v (in the UK) to neutral.
Can’t see how this can have a CE safety mark if this is by design. It might be faulty, but I’d be highly surprised it’s still working. Will be contacting Amazon and the seller to check. But wanted to pass out an alert
They don’t get a CE mark. The CE mark offers self certification (yes, this is totally idiotic). And like pretty much all of the myriad of Cheap Chinese Crap manufacturers, they will simply self certify their devices (regardless whether they burn your house down and/or kill you) and slap the mark on it. If something goes wrong, your chance to press charges against them is pretty much null, considering they’re based in China without legal representation in any of the countries who actually have the CE mark natively.
That said, having the aerial live is probably not intended and may be due to incorrect wiring or device failure. But then again, you never know. Some of this cheap stuff is based on circuit designs that are completely off the scale in terms of electrical and fire safety faults. I would never use any of these Moes / Sonoffs / whatever from Ali in anything that involves 120/240V. I’d rather not die by spending a little more on a device that was tested by a reputable company that actually has something to lose if their devices end up killing people or burning homes down.
I always double-double-check my wiring. 100% it was correct.
Interesting on the CE mark - didn’t know that, lesson well learnt. Bought Moes from Amazon as thought it was better and safer than the cheap ones without the CE mark.
They actually did a good job on the branding and marketing, it makes it look like a western style high quality brand with certifications, etc. But Moes is actually Wenzhou Morning Electronics based in Zhejiang. It’s all the same cheap noname stuff drop shipped from China.
Just to be clear, I was not questioning your wiring, I was questioning whether the original wiring, hopefully done by an electrician, was correct. I’ve seen a fair amount of hackery.
An update from BigClive (youtube electronics guy, very interesting channel https://www.youtube.com/c/Bigclive), I asked him about this device, his words:
“Hi Michael, it’s highly probable that the unit uses a simple capacitive dropper power supply inside. If it does then that means the aerial is referenced to the mains supply and the end of the wire should be folded over and covered with heatshrink sleeve. Technically speaking the wire should also be double insulated mains rated, but usually isn’t.”
So it seems that the makers of this device cheaped out on a double insulated wire and a folded over end with some shrink wrap. I bought another to verify the advert pictures were correct and had exactly the same thing.
I could have fixed it, but the less we buy of dangerous stuff like this the better. Sent both back.
