Waze Accuracy

First of all (and it feels weird having to say this, but you know, internet) the terrible incidents (two people are fighting for their lives) that happened this morning are far more important than my minor inconvenience on my commute. However, that leads me on to Waze.

What is people’s experience of using Waze? I’ve not used it heavily but have done in the past and it has seemed to work. However this morning there was chaos on the roads. A major local motorway was closed causing huge delays everywhere and gridlock on almost every other road used in a large region. Rather than a 20 minute commute I had an hour commute. The Waze app on my phone does indeed show most of this, but my Waze travel time sensor happily tells me that my commute is normal. I have a quick and easy commute to work every day and don’t need to use Waze or generally worry about traffic and I would never expect to be notified of every little nuanced traffic incident but if Waze cannot pickup something like this which is a major incident that happened several hours before my morning alert, combining police road closures and several thousand (probably tens of thousands) of people in very slow moving traffic I can’t see the point of it.

My Waze sensor “behaves”, I have an alert to tell me if there’s a long drive home and it’s normally spot on.
There is a delay in getting the data however (you may have noticed it takes several minutes for the Waze sensor to initialise on startup) so maybe that’s what happened to you?

Thanks for the reply. I do often get messages in the log about Waze but didn’t get any since yesterday. The sensor does have information but unfortunately doesn’t have a last updated that I can. It’s interesting that yours is fine as from your profile I am presuming you are in the UK too. Are you using the ‘EU’ region? Would you mind posting your sensor?

sure:

- platform: waze_travel_time
  name: Lolo to Home
  origin: person.laurent
  destination: zone.home
  region: 'EU'

Thanks, I think I found my issue. I had ‘realtime’ set to false; I think I enabled that to try and stop all the error messages which was clearly a mistake!
