What automation to showcase on a "Tech Workout"

Hey Guys,

We have a bi-monthly “Tech Workout” where we are helping tech people to get more familiar with some innovative technology. This month (next Sunday) we are going to build a home automation server on an R-Pi, utilizing HA (obviously).

What topics, automation examples would you suggest to definitely showcase? Since most likely the participants will have different smart devices (if any), I am planning to do a few automation that does not require a smart device, e.g. weather, Covid-19 - what else should I include?

Thanks a lot for your help and ideas in advance!

How to set up the following integrations that are useful:

( GPIO switch only. The binary sensor has an issue, there’s a fix on the way).

Addons, SAMBA, SSH.

Backup snapshots! (And how to get them off the SD card)

I would go for something as interactive with the group as possible, that usually holds peoples attention. Maybe setup a Twitter hashtag for the workout and let the pi do something depending on what people write “to” it through that hashtag? Show stats on the popularity of the hashtag and maybe let HA pick a random person who used the hashtag that day as the HA influencer of the day :joy:
I once setup a pi to connect to the api of Google analytics to let a toy train run a little at every sale a sales team made. Little things like that are usually much fun and appreciated.
