I see it more as pros and cons.
I also tend to download a local copy and manage it myself.
But using someone elses remote config can be simpler for some users and means someone else is (hopefully) maintaining it.
There was an example of an ESPHome breaking change to the Athom config a little while ago, which got updated by Athom pretty quickly in that instance (but not before I did it locally;).
