What is the performance impact of many zones in Home Assistant?

For no particular reason but making a “family location” dashboard more interesting, I’m thinking programmatically adding zones for neighborhoods and landmarks in my city and perhaps beyond. Is there any downside to this? What if there are thousands of zones?

And, slightly related: are there options or extensions which allow for polygon definitions for zones rather than a simple radius?

Node red has this option.
You use the device tracker as entity and you draw an area on a map as the trigger point.

Cool, I’ll look into that. I assume it can be done programmatically as well; my city provides GIS polygon data I’d like to just convert/import.
