What sensor could I use to detect dog entry vs dog exit?

Howdy - I have a swinging dog door that is hinged at the top that my dog can use 24h. I can add a window switch to detect when he goes through the door, but what I actually want is to detect when he has entered vs when he has exited.

I thought about an input binary helper, but sometimes he opens the door with his nose to sniff outside and doesn’t actually go out the door, so I couldn’t just toggle an input binary when the door is activated. Plus that would be difficult because the door swings so a window sensor would go open-close-open-close-open-close for a few seconds every time he goes through.

Is there a better hardware solution for this? Or should I go back to the configuration category and I can still do it with a window sensor?

Tagged zigbee because 90% of my other devices are zigbee.

Hi @stewartmjohnson - how about a zigbee, e.g. Aqara vibration sensor, which would give you different z-axis (or which ever main axis, depending on how you attach it to the swinging door) negative or positive values for going out or in. And if he only sniffs outside, the lower value could also recognise that and not register it as a full going out.

Could be one possible solution.
