What would be involved in migrating from an HA Green to Yellow?

I currently have an HA Green and have the opportunity to get an HA Yellow with CM5, 8GB of RAM, and 500GB SSD drive. It has HA pre-installed. So would migrating from the Green to the Yellow look something like this:

  1. Update HA on the Yellow
  2. Restore the latest Green backup to the Yellow
  3. Connect the ZWA-2 and ZBT-2 to the Yellow
  4. Do I need to restore the Z-Wave and Zigbee backups then?

What am I missing?

-Thanks

it should be exactly as you say, backup, then restore to the new one.

I did not have to do anything with zigbee/zwave when I migrated from HABLUE to an x86 mini pc other than plugging those devices in.

backup green – if you are using an encrypted/cloud backup, make ABSOLUTELY sure you have the backup recovery key saved on your PC or you won’t be able to restore the backup without it
shut down green
plugin and power up yellow
during the onboarding, choose restore from backup
follow onboarding/restore prompts

in a worst case scenario, you can simply reverse and go back to the yellow

Thanks, I had the same “worst case scenario” thought. I will definitely make sure I have the backup key! I misspoke - The HA Yellow actually has 8 GB of RAM. I currently have one Reolink doorbell video feed and I asked Santa for two Tapo MagCam cameras for Christmas. I think the Yellow should handle these video feeds and more without bogging down.

The backup to the HA Yellow does not work due to a discrepancy in HA versions. So now I’m stuck trying to figure out how to update the Yellow before restoring the Green backup. I get this when trying to restore the backup to the new Yellow:

I believe usually HAOS will update to current during the install/onboard.

I haven’t tried it, but I guess you can skip the onboard restore, do a basic install and make sure it updates, then do a manual restore from the backup settings.

settings > system > backups > mybackups select a backup > select all/what you want to restore > click restore

maybe this also help to do a full reset

Thanks, the full reset doesn’t work for me. I connected a USB cable from my Windows PC to the USB-c port on the Yellow, and it doesn’t create a port for some reason. I am shocked to find that the reset button does not work on a Yellow, like it does on the Green.

So are you saying I could just click the “Create my smart home”, update the Yellow, then restore my Green backup? But what if a user name is different or something? Would that be overwritten by restoring the Green backup?

-Thanks

I haven’t done a restore over a working system before, but I assume that all previous configuration will be cleared and the backup will restore the system state from the backup.

that the reset is not working, is concerning.

did you follow @ https://support.nabucasa.com/hc/en-us/articles/25463622043165-Resetting-Home-Assistant-Yellow ?

I tried from Windows but a port is NOT created when I connect the USB cable from my PC to the Yellow. I’ll have to give Linux a try.

Right now just proceeded creating a new instance, I’m currently update HA, then I’ll restore my backup. Hopefully things will be the same!

-Thanks

UPDATE: So what I did was click on the “Create my smart home”, used the same user name and password from the Green, updated the Yellow, then restored the Green backup to the Yellow. Then I powered down the Yellow and connected the ZWA-2 and ZBT-2, powered on the Yellow, and all is well.

Thanks for your help with this.
