I am in the proces of moving seperate docker containers for Unifi, DSMR etc into HA. With this I hope to bring down the amount of maintenance on backups, updates and so on.
After migrating Unifi & DSMR I see that backups for these add-ons are located in the “backup” folder in the root of HAOS (/backup). So far so good but I do not see this folder or these files in the daily HA backup. Is this a config error on my side or do I have to backup this folder manually?
Having no “backup of the backup” means that I lose all backups when restoring a HA backup. I have my HA backups on an external storage so I have to backup these backups manually beside my HA backups…
@BebeMischa I do use the build-in backup facility (Action “Home Assistant Supervisor: Create a full backup”) within HA to backup to an external drive, but this specific backup folder is not included in a full backup…
Because that’s the folder, where backups of your HA are stored. This folder is not a part of your HA. It is a side-folder. If you want backups of the backups, then you have to back it up by yourself.
It works, as designed.
If it will be taken to the full backup too, the files will become gigantic later, heavy to manage.
It is fine, as it is…
I think I am explaining my problem not as clear as I think I am, probably a language thing.
My HA instance has an external backup location on a NAS. This is where all the configurations and add-ons are being backupped. I am happy with the setup and have tested the backup a number of times in the past.
Two add-ons produce backups themselves. DSMRReader and Unifi. Those backups are the only backups that end up in said “backup” folder. For Unifi the number of backups is limited to 10 (via the application) and for DSMRReader the backups are limited to 7.
If I restore a full HA backup the backups mentioned under (2) are gone, because that folder is not part of the backup, hence I have lost some backup history. Especially for DSMRReader that keeps 8 years of energy/solarpanel/water/gas usage I rather have more than less backups.
You will need to get those 2 addons to save backups to your NAS as well, rather than an HA folder. Addons are only containers for said software, and although you can maintain them through HA they are not part of the HA code.
All changes on the next release.
The current system remains in place, but there is an additional automatic system and I believe storage in the clout or elsewhere.
