I have just started my journey with HASS, but the road is bumpy. I use raspberry pi 3 and everything is OK, but from time to time I have some issues. For example with Docker on rpi. I have started to think about something else.
Maybe Synology/ Qnap or Intel NUC? What would you recommend?
I’m running on a spare Windows desktop using Ubuntu under VirtualBox and it works really well. I now have 12 docker containers running with more on the way, so the extra grunt is handy. One of the features I like most is being able to backup everything easily with a VirtualBox snapshot. If you’ve got one lying around, it’s hard to go past the cost.
I also have hass.io running on a pi3, and every few days it seems to power off. No idea why.
Thanks for advices.
I was thinking about NAS, but I have one DS212J and it does not support Docker. Other thing is that it is really slow. Maybe I will do some upgrade…
Using old PC would be OK, but it wold use so much energy…
I recently switched to an Intel NUC7CPYH I think. Just a Celeron processor and running Hassio in Docker as well as a downloaded etc. Replaced 2 Pi’s I had been using but oh so fast. Got 8Gb RAM and a 240GB SSD. Pretty inexpensive and so fast to restart now and more stable for other apps I was running on the second Pi.
The Pi3B is awesome for Hassio and HassOS but doesn’t compare to a NUC. I chose Debian for the NUC instead of Ubuntu - Stability over shiny new functionality. Rock solid so far.
With the risk of get head chopped off by the community I must say I have never understood the use of Pi as a production hardware. It was never meant to be used like that. Myself I switched quickly to a Nuc, mostly because I wanted to escape from the SD cards, not the most stable thing in the world. I want to be sure when I wake up in the morning that the system is still running. I trust it to help keep my family safe and that is worth every cent spent
I think the same. I started wit pi, because it was used in my other project before. It is good and cheap starting point to check if you really want to start your never ending journey with home automation setup.
I will switch to NUC with SSD and some classic HDD to put my NAS and HA on it.
I have debian with docker. Run HA, AppD, NodeRed, Mqtt, Mariadb. Also the camerasurveillance server Xeoma, and the Traccar gps server. Nothing else and its use very little of its resources.
