Which OS for thin client to run home assistant and other stuff

Just bought an HP T630 to use as a home server and want it to run:

Home assistant
Plex server
Torrent client- preferably qbtorrent
Act as NAS for USB attached storage

Pretty new to all this. I’ve run all the above on PIs or windows before but not sure the best route to go to set it up.

From my research so far I see it I could:

Run HAOS and run everything else as add-ons: Strikes me this might be less reliable as requires all the add-ons to keep working together.

Run windows LTSC: already on the machine and I’m familiar with it, but guessing it might not be the preferred platform round here?

Looks like UNRAID or Proxmox or a Linux distro might be better options but all new to me (have some Linux experience but not a lot)

Don’t mind a bit of tinkering to get it set up, but then want something that isn’t high maintenance once it’s set up

Advice on best route please.

Going the Proxmox route provides options as you can run UNRAID, TrueNAS, and everything else short and long term in separate VMs. UNRAID and TrueNAS are primarily digital storage appliances with ability to run VMs, whereas Proxmox has been architected to reliably run and scale VMs of any kind.

However, you should test if the T630 is capable of efficiently running all the workloads you require under Proxmox/UNRAID/TrueNAS. You need to test yourself for a bit of time prior to going one way or another.

Proxmox, using tteck’s scripts would be my suggestion.

A T630 is very well suited to run with HAOS and I also tried once, just briefly as a ‘is this possible’ test, to install Proxmox on it and it worked.
However, with Proxmox and the services you are mentioning might be another ballgame and unless you find someone who is doing something similar, your best option would be to just give it a try.

Also, I would advice to run it with at least 16Gb RAM.

Thanks everyone, going to give Proxmox a bash and see where that gets me.
