Whole Home Power Monitoring

I’m wanting to implement a whole home power monitoring solution. I’m not interested in any of the DIY options others have used, as I’m not a electronics tinkerer. However, I can handle a plug-in-play solution like Shelly or Sense. I’m pretty sure the Sense offering is too pricey and unreliable with device discovery. Which pretty much only leaves a Shelly device.

I’ve done some research on their two options: Shelly EM and Shelly 3EM. And to be honest, it all sounds a bit confusing given not having an electrical background. Every time I look into these devices I walk away with a different understanding of their use/installation; which has lead me to writing this post.

HOME: I live in a typical single family home in the United States; more specifically Texas. I point this out as it answers the question of how many power phases I’m dealing with (single/split phase). Here is a shot of my breaker/main box.

That said, here are questions for those in the know:

  1. What Shelly device best serves my needs?
  2. If you know, please explain why you recommend said device?
  3. What information does HA integration provide on power use?
  4. What is the proper wiring procedures given the image above?

PS: I’d really like to hear from community members that have installed/used the devices.

  • Integrates easily with HA.
  • Non-intrusive= you don’t have to connect ANY wires, simply clip the CT’s onto each circuit you want to monitor
  • Works flawlessly
