Why are devices lost from ZigBee network?

I do have a Zigbee network (ZHA with ConBee II).

What really drives me nuts is that I regularly loose devices from the network, for example the Aqara pushbuttons. I understand that the network needs hubs to guarantee connectivity in remote areas. I have a number of TradFri Zigbee bulbs that act as hubs.

What I don’t understand is why a device should be lost permanently when temporarily a hub becomes unavailable (for example, if I unplug a lamp). In a robust network I would expect the device message to be re-routed through other hubs, or at least re-establish a connection when the hub becomes available again later. With my Aqara buttons, this seems not the be the case. I need to re-pair them, only to find that a while later they are lost from the network again. Sometimes “a while” is a few hours, sometimes it is many months.

Why is this happening? Doesn’t a Zigbee network provide this form of robustness?

If it is an Aqara-only issue (and no, I don’t plan to get their hub), what are reliable Zigbee buttons that work with ZHA?

Older Xiaomi/Aqara Zigbee devices are famous for sticking to their route and not searching for a new route when their upstream route is lost.

Check if your end devices use zigbee v1 or zigbee v3.

Version 1 are the problematic devices.

Even not so old ones…
I have plenty of supposed v3 aqara devices that wont re-route.

Which manufacturer?

I’ve seen one of my Aqara contact sensors re-rout after I removed the router it was connected to.

After a bit more research, seems I was mistaken about what devices were v1.2 vs v3.

I’ve got alot of aqara contact sensors that look physically identical to these:-

The above are model MCCGQ12LM (T1), but mine are just MCCGQ12LM (not T1) which aren’t v3.0 it seems.

Yeah the case is identical between the versions.

Which was handy when replacing v1 with v3 devices as I could use the existing bases that were extremely well stuck with the supplied double sided tape. That stuff is difficult to remove even with orange oil and alcohol. I was disappointed in myself that it took me about half a dozen replacements before I realised I could do this. :man_facepalming:

Genius idea. They are stuck on well.

Apart from the very occasional drop out, my 1.2 devices seem to do ok, so I suspect I’ll keep hold of them until I have a more compelling reason to upgrade them.
