And not only that. There are other things in the settings menu i would consider functions and not settings. Like “Devices and Services” or “Areas Labels & Zones”. These dont belong in Settings. However the “Developer Tools” should imho live within Settings - there is no reason for that to be a separate sidebar tab.
I don’t want to remove it - I use dev tools regularly.
This discussion is not about what you and me want - its about the general logic of the menu structure and UI that is super confusing and an added, uneccesary threshold for people starting out with HA.
Also for example: Why is it that e.g. HACS or Node Red sitting among the dashboards? They are not Dashboards, but tools. The whole UI structure has sort of been “outgrown” by the reality of how powerful and complex HA has become.
Obviously you get used to these things with time - but that doesnt make it a good UI design choice.
There should e.g. be collapsible sidebar sections. One for dashboards, one for Integrations & Add-Ons, one for Automattions and Tools, one for Settings etc.
This is not hating on any of the Devs. I know very well how time consuming and hard it is to keep UI/UX Design in sync with constant backend development - i’m just saying there are opportunities for improved user experience.
I don’t get it. Where would be the improvement if they would move it to settings as you suggested and there is no standard way to get it back top top level sidebar.
When it is now at top level sidebar and there is a standart possibility for everyone to remove it.
Currently every can remove it, who don’t want it there. Done.
I think we are not really talking about the same thing.
I mentioned dev tools just as an example of the inconsitencies in the UI. I know full well I can (at least to a certain extent) customize what I wanna see in the sidebar. But dev tools are the only thing thats sitting on the left bottom above “settings”, while all others (some of wich could well be considered “dev tools” too) group up on the top left with the dashboards. I’m sure there was a logic reason for these placement once, but from a user-perspective that reason is not evident at all or maybe just not evident anymore, since HA changed so much since.
How exactly this could be improved and if in this example dev tools belong in Setttings, up top with other sidebar shortcuts, if some of those sidebar shortcuts need to join the dev-tools on the bottom or maybe a completely new UI element or structure is needed would have to be evaluated in a UX/UI design study. I’m not saying I know the answer.
