WiFi as fallback when Wired Ethernet not available

I usually have the Raspberry Pi 4 with Home Assistant wired with ethernet connection.
However, from time to time I need to move it physically and connect using WiFi.

I currently have both connections, but I’d prefer to only use WiFi when there is no wired Ethernet available.

Is that possible? How?

Sorry, I don’t have the solution but am looking for it.
It would be great to have the rPi with ultra fast ethernet but the flexibility to put the rPi somewhere else or have less service interruption if the wired network is interrupted.
Some thouhts:

  • The IP address (ideally) would have to stay the same as services like MQTT may rely on that
  • Most routers that allow DHCP reservations based on MAC addresses don’t let you configure 2 MAC addresses (wifi and ethernet) with 1 IP address
  • You may have to use fixed IP addresses. Does the rPi allow you to configure the same IP for different interfaces?

When I get this to work I will add a response here.
