WiFi Smart Plug with accurate low-power energy monitoring?

I am working on a project that requires discerning between about 5W and 2.5W power draw from a smart outlet. Does anyone have experience with run-of-the-mill Tuya type devices? I saw a comment in another post saying some Tuya plugs aren’t great at that low of a current.

Would Kasa be a better option? I’d prefer a WiFi device, but I could go for ZigBee too.

Thanks in advance!

Have a look at the Athom devices. Far better than Tuya since they work locally. Unfortunately I can’t vouch for their ability to monitor low power.

Thanks for the link! I see they use a HLW8032 chipset to measure energy, which appears to be pretty accurate. Just ordered one and I’ll report back.

Hi, I was just looking into the same sort of thing, I have a few TUYA smart plus, which as you say don’t register well at low voltages (return 0 below 3w). How did you get on with the Athom plug, was it accurate at low power?

The Athom is working great. Seems very precise. Here is a laptop plugged into it:

I’ve heard some folks having trouble with athom plugs durability.

How’s the plug working for you one year later?

I’m looking for a local Wi-Fi power monitoring plug and not song a lot of options out of the box other than athom. I’ve been eyeing the switchbot mini and flashing it with switchbota but it seems like a lot of work…

I’ve had some Athom smart plugs for 2+ years, and doing fine with them. Also bought some Kauf plugs about same time (kaufha.com) and they’re also doing well.

Great to hear! Thanks!

Just ordered a 2 pack. Looking forward to playing more with ESPhome and more esp32 devices in the future.
