Window/Door Sensors with long battery life

Hi, I am searching for Window contacts with long battery life and Zigbee

I want to use them in our company to watch if any windows are left open.
Some of them will be in hard accessible positions, so I am searching for some that are running at least one year.

Any suggestions?

TLDR: Aqara is his choice. I use one as well and it works great.

I am unbiased on brands… zigbee would be the protocol. Using sonoff for 9 months now (since starting with HA) and if (!) the % are true, I have still 2 years to go before battery-out

Oh cool thing!

Thanks for the video. I guess the problem is settled :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

At home I use sonoff since yesterday lol

But i’ve read that some people have experienced them already dying after 3 - 4 months

Cannot confirm, acquired 6 of them September and still all above > 70%. Just one of them arrived with a low-55% but that is now 45%…of course… if the values are trustworthy still has to be proven

maybe those guys have gotten older batches with bad batteries

Who knows

The Ring door sensors are a good choice but a bit of a pain to pair and configure in HA.

Could you help elaborate? Is it through ring integration, or through some z-wave dongle and maybe zwave2mqtt?
What are the hoops you had to jump through to get it paired and configured?

Just want to get a sense on what we are facing.

You will need a z-wave dongle. No need for the ring integration. They are just a bit hard to pair. Ive had good luck factory resetting first, then going through the pairing process. Sometimes they dont work properly right away and a re-interview usually fixes it.
They will show up as a safety device class. Instead of open/close, they say safe/unsafe. There are also about 25 entities to disable since they do nothing.
To fix the safety class issue, I would edit the core.entity_registry and change the device class to window or door depending on the application.
I do believe it is not necessary to edit the core.entity_registry anymore with the newest update. If thats the case, its not such a pain to configure these anymore. That wont fix teh frustrating pairing part, but once paired they preform pretty much flawlessly.
This is my procedure for pairing:

  • Factory reset by holding down button in small hole on back until it flashes red.
  • Start pairing in home assistant
  • Hold down main button for 5 seconds until it starts flashing faster
  • When pairing starts, it will hang up and flash red. Press reset button on back for a few seconds (don’t go past 9 seconds). Do this a couple times and it should pair properly
If it doesnt work properly, do a re-interview and that usually fixes it.

On my own statement of Sonof %, first ‘surprise’ today, I have not analyzed in detail yet if this is something else but the battery (poor contact?)…will do that next week
