I am running HA v46 on an rPi. I have a Wink Hub 2.
I bought a few First Alert smoke detectors that do not work with the Wink, so I bought an Aeotek Gen5 for those. Can I run both the Wink and the Aeotek at the same time? Something just tells me that there would be a conflict with this configuration.
As an alternative, can I hook all of my Z-wave devices to the Aeotek and not use the Wink for Z-wave? Would my wink-compatible devices (such as wall switches) still respond to Alexa commands? Is there a way to turn off the Wink’s Z-wave?
Yep. Been doing it for almost a year now with a Hub v1 and a Gen 5. No issues, no conflicts.
I have even taken things off the hub and moved over to native support on things like Hue lights.
You could, but I’d see no reason to not run both, personally. Certain devices, like locks for instance, are much easier to set up on Wink than in HA/OZW in my opinion.
You’d have to run something like a custom intent, HAASKA or Emulated Hue. None of them are trivial, but if you don’t mind a little work and research, it’s certainly something a lot of users do. I’m of the mind that as long as it’s working for me and doesn’t create a point of failure, I am happy so I have been sticking with my current set up. I feel like it gives me more options.
Without hacking the hub (physically or by rooting it) I do not believe there is any way to turn off the ZWave radio, but there shouldn’t be a need to. In fact, the hub acts as a repeater since it’s powered so it’s actually to your advantage.
Did you end up looking into or doing this? I finally bit the bullet and bought the stick and was about to start moving some devices over from my Wink v1. But the idea of adding it as a secondary controller is intriguing. I’m guessing it would take over for z-wave in the event of a Wink outage? Do you lose functionality?
