Wired hardware for "DIY smart lock" (plug'n'play)?

Hi everybody,

we have a Nuki smart lock at our front door. It is integrated with Home Assistant and HA does all the logic. There is a Wiegand reader (tag and keycode) on the outside, you scan your tag or punch in your number, this number is processed by Home Assistant. Then, depending on the tag / number, HA might open the door for your.

So far, so good.

Then, recently, I asked about wired alternatives for zigbee radiator controllers and was recommended simple thermostat actuators. They are only on / off, you plug them in, done. (of course, you need to do the logic in Home Assistant as well, for example, control them via smart outlet, get current temperature via sensor, and set it up as generic thermostat).

But this solution is so much better imho, now I was wondering whether there is something similar for a door.

Something, that is mounted to the inside of the door, “grabs” your key, and turns it for you (locked, unlocked, ideally open the door as well). I guess the “open the door” thing is difficult to do via on/off, so I’d be fine with connecting this device to a smart outlet and simply locking or unlocking the door by toggling that smart outlet.

Nuki works fine so far, no complaints, except that I cannot get matter to work (not that big of a deal) and that is runs on battery. I am aware of outlet-to-AA-battery adapters, but it feels like they don’t work that well.

But since I use HASS, anyway, I don’t need any functions Nuki provides. I don’t need the nuki keypad, because I have an ESPHome keypad. I don’t need to give people access via the nuki app, because I can simply generate limited keycodes (or even tags) for them - if needed, which is the case 1% tops. I don’t need geofencing via nuki app, because Home Assistant could do that for me (don’t use it, anyway). Etc. etc.

I wasn’t able to find anything like this, but perhaps anybody knows of such a product and can recommend it.

Oh btw., the “plug’n’play” in the title means, I don’t want to build this myself. I can do simple ESPHome things, but I don’t have any experience with stepper motors etc., so ideally there would be a device one can buy, connect to a smart outlet, and be done.

Thanks in advance for your ideas

How would you control:

  • rotation direction
  • rotation angle

Evva Emzy could be what you are looking for. But it’s impossible to source…
Easiest way would be to solder 2 wires to the existing push button of Nuki and control that with your “smart outlet”. Another 2 wires to battery contacts for 5V2A adapter.

Thank you!

I guess wiring 5V2A to the Nuki works, but then I could simply keep the existing solution and keep the Nuki battery always hooked up to the charger. I won’t have to modify anything this way.

Yeah, didn’t consider rotation direction and angle. I thought perhaps there is something that rotates one direction when off and the opposite when power is applied. (that’s what the thermal actuators do). But then, how would it know where to stop? Right

This was just inspired by exchanging zigbee TRVs with thermal actuators. The actuators seem to work better and are cheaper (not considering additional costs, such as temp sensors, smart plug / miniR2 / similar)… I thought, perhaps there is a cheaper solution that works as well (or better) that would be worth switching to.

If there isn’t, I can live with the Nuki as is, and it works even without modifying / soldering anything, as it can actually be always connected to the charger. So it is basically wired, as in while it does run on battery, the battery would always be charged.
