WTH - Access control for Garage Doors

I would like to see additional access/security controls for Garage Doors. Right now they’re just treated like any other cover but for a lot of people the garage door is the primary way that they access their home. I love the convenience of being able to open my garage door from my phone app or even through an automation (actionable notifications are awesome) but I don’t like how little security there is. Anyone with access to my home assistant dashboard could, fairly easily, open the garage door and have full physical access to my home.

I would like to see Home Assistant implement some sort of security check, configurable on the card, that asks for a preset pin-code whenever opening a garage door. This could also be extended to locks and to trying to edit the UI or access the settings.

If implemented, there would inevitably be posts along the lines of, “I can’t remember my pin and now I can’t access my settings to update Home Assistant” so having some sort of fallback to reset the pin would also need to be considered.

Thanks for reading this far. Cheers.

Locks actually already have this. In the template lock page it’s suggested that you can make a “lock” for your garage door. Perhaps it might make sense to have similar for covers as well.

That makes sense. It’s been a while since I set up my front door lock and it looks like I used a custom component for the pin security at the time.

The overall topic would be to have RBAC (role based access control) established in HA.
currently you’re either admin or non-admin.

RBAC (or ACLs) have been asked for long time …

But if you don’t trust the people then don’t give them access to HA.

But you could create a template lock with a pin.
This merely hides the real switch but at least it gives you a lock with pin on the dashboard

Set the garage door opener on a separate page and give only access to that page for the people you trust
