WTH: Area groups

Why can’t we add areas to other areas, or create area groups.

I have an open concept house with the kitchen, living room, and dining room open to each other. I’d like to create an area or area group called “Great Room” to target the 3 open rooms.

For outside, I have a front yard and backyard. Making a “floor” called outside makes sense to group these, but I’m not able to split the front yard into driveway, porch, and yard.

For now, I can use labels as a work around, but that it isn’t very intuitive.

There have been many conversations about this over tge course of a couple of years. If you’re interested in learning all of the reasoning, be sure to search the forum.

Long story short, it isn’t going to happen. Instead, you have labels that will allow you to create more versatile groups.

The concept of nested areas was proposed and rejected.

What was accepted was the concept of floors that can contain areas. In addition, the ability to add labels was added.

It wasn’t rejected necessarily, it just wasn’t accepted at that time.

To quote Frenck’s answer:

From a software perspective, in general, I think nesting is always tricky and prone to unexpected behavior or issues and should be avoided. But… that doesn’t exclude them from being a viable option in the long run.

What I do know is that this is a separate discussion from having floors. I don’t think floors kill the option of having nested areas in the future (which is a different architectural proposal/discussion). I do question its validity, but again, different discussion

A lot of discussion in this WTH about the same subject: WTH: Why can't we classify areas as Interior or Exterior? 🏡

In that case, this WTH will not be rejected but it will also not be accepted at this time.

at the time of the Floor introduction and not accepting nested areas, the suggested fix/workaround was to use more than 1 floor on the same level…

those floors can then have nested areas
