Apologies for resurrecting an old thread and one in a 2022 WTH as well.
But - was this behavioural issue ever considered as an issue, or is the new behaviour “as designed” and not going to change ?
I’m on the latest and greatest and I’d really like to move more stuff from yaml to gui, but I like that my groups for the alarm panel (just like in this thread) are grouped, but with a single click I can see which of the doors / motion sensors have been triggered and the helper groups does not allow me to do that.
I voted for this because I miss it too and it is also keeping me from switching to the gui. I doubt it will ever happen though.
The old version creates entities in the group domain, which allows group specific behavior. The GUI helper however, creates entities of the same domain as the sensors in the group. That has advantages, because the UI can treat the entity as any other entity of the same type. But has the disadvantage that it is not clear by looking at the entity that is is a group.
So the UI for each domain should know to treat it as a group as well as a normal entity of that domain. That is not something that is easily done.
Adding the old group to the UI would be confusing. Which group should the user pick, and why? Both have different advantages and disadvantages.
