WTH - Categories need some love.... Please add color & bold or bigger font for categories

Love the Categories but could we please have some color & font options. Also would be nice to have a bold or bigger font for the categories

Also it is a bit hard to find how to add a category. It is not intuitive. The first place I expect it to be is in the hamburger menu after selecting an event to edit.

Thanks for all the good work

As a screen reader user, I’d like to expand on this feedback regarding categories in HA. While categories are indeed a valuable feature for organizing automations, scripts, scenes and helpers, there are some accessibility concerns that should be addressed alongside the visual improvements suggested.

Currently, categories lack proper semantic structure - they should be implemented as H2 headings to provide clear navigation landmarks for users of assistive technologies. This would:

  • Create a proper content hierarchy where categories act as section headers
  • Allow screen reader users to quickly navigate between different categories using heading shortcuts
  • Make the structure programmatically determinable, benefiting both sighted and non-sighted users

So while I support the request for visual customization (colors and fonts), implementing proper heading structure should be a priority from an accessibility standpoint. This would align with WCAG 2.4.6 (Headings and Labels) and WCAG 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships) guidelines.

I also agree that the category creation UI could be more intuitive. Having it clearly visible in the edit view’s main menu would improve discoverability for all users.

Thank you for considering these accessibility improvements alongside the visual enhancements.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. I hope this will inspire others who would benefit from this, to chime in and vote. I had no idea that there were specifications for such things, but it all makes sense.
